In a significant development ahead of the upcoming national polls, two high-profile figures in Nepali politics have joined forces. This coalition comes in the aftermath of large-scale and deadly youth-led protests that shook the country earlier this year and eventually led to the removal of the sitting government.
A Pledge to Address Youth Demands
Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have officially pledged to focus on the issues highlighted by the younger generation. This commitment follows the turbulent anti-graft unrest that occurred in September, which resulted in significant casualties.
"Consensus must not be as the leader seeks, it should be what the country needs," stated Lamichhane following the agreement was signed.
The September uprising was sparked by widespread frustration over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This action served as a spark for deeper resentment stemming from years of economic stagnation and persistent accusations of deep-rooted graft in politics.
Details of the Fresh Political Partnership
According to the formal pact, the positions for the approaching election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the leader of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's nominee for the position of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known 51-year-old TV host, he founded the RSP in 2022, channeling broad discontent with the country's established political class. He has previously served in the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago released on bail in a case related to alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a central player in Nepal's current political shift. He was instrumental in setting up the caretaker government that took over after the previous administration was removed.
Broader Political Discussions Underway
In a separate event, the sitting interim prime minister recently conducted consultations with a number of leading political figures. These talks involved former prime ministers and the presidents of other major parties, marking the initial such gathering since the time of the protests.
Following these meetings, the prime minister posted on social media to state that conducting a credible election is a shared responsibility. The message reiterated the government's commitment to guaranteeing a secure and open atmosphere for the polls, noting that efforts are being made to eliminate any uncertainty.
