The anticipation about The Game Awards reached a fever pitch, notably after host Geoff Keighley posted an enigmatic photo of a strange statue. The question has now been solved. Larian Studios is creating a fresh Divinity game.
Titled simply Divinity, the game was presented with a daring trailer that included intense imagery, from a figure engulfed in flames to scenes of revelry and the literal opening of infernal gates.
A Different Direction
Anyone anticipating Divinity Original Sin 3, that is not happening. The studio warned that a direct sequel to its venerated RPGs is not on the cards right now.
However, the developer described this new Divinity as a next chapter of the main series. This choice of words suggests that the team is likely crafting a faster-paced experience rather than another tactical title. Currently, this is speculation, as only a teaser video is available.
The Legacy of Divinity
The Divinity series is highly rated and arguably it kicked off the modern wave of deep computer role-playing games. These games are known for intricate stories, player agency, and flexible progression—elements that subsequently were perfected in games like Baldur's Gate 3.
While its universe is classic fantasy, what really distinguishes Divinity apart is the remarkable agency given to the player.
While numerous modern RPGs have pared back options, Divinity is full of specialized paths only possible with a specific type of character with a personal story.
The series is also famously open-ended, enabling players to experiment throughout the entire experience. Most missions can be approached in a variety of manners, sometimes in surprising fashion.
- You might find an answer because you heeded something a dog told you.
- Or, you could defeat a foe by teleporting a glob of lava in a unorthodox way.
The Journey Continues
It is precisely these elements that have cemented the series to label games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as a top-tier role-playing games in history. Now, the RPG community can look forward to another adventure in this groundbreaking franchise.
